Welcome to my story—a personal journey through beach music, shag dancing, and the unforgettable North and South Carolina beach clubs that shaped my life. I’m a 74-year-old man, born and raised in the southeastern corner of North Carolina, where the Atlantic Ocean’s rhythm harmonized perfectly with the soulful soundtracks of my youth.
Growing up in this coastal paradise, I was surrounded by coastal music traditions that celebrated community, dance, and good vibes. The shag dance wasn’t just a pastime—it was a way of life, passed down through generations, danced barefoot in beach clubs and under open skies.
My Beach Music Beginnings
From early on, I was captivated by the sounds of The Tams, The Showmen, The Platters, and The Intruders. These beach music legends didn’t just sing—they told stories that echoed across Carolina shores. I’ll never forget hearing “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy” at a local beach club and feeling the joy ripple through the crowd.
“Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy”—a moment frozen in time. The Tams brought beach music to life for me.
Shagging Across the Carolinas
My love for this music took me all over—from Red’s Beach Club in Kinston to the iconic Embers Club in Atlantic Beach. These places were more than venues—they were living memories of live beach music performances that kept our spirits dancing through the decades.
I spent unforgettable nights at:
- The Surf Club, Myrtle Beach
- The Ocean Drive Beach Music Festival, North Myrtle Beach
- The Plantation, Little River
Wherever I went, the Carolina beach bands like The Embers, The Fantastic Shakers, and The Holiday Band kept the floor alive with rhythm and heart. The shag became second nature—a glide, a groove, a grace that lived in my soul.
Beyond the Carolinas
My passion for beach music history didn’t stop at the state line. I followed the rhythm across the U.S.—to beach clubs in Alabama, California, and beyond. I even brought the music with me abroad, playing tracks on road trips through Europe, introducing new friends to this slice of Carolina joy.
Some highlights:

Reflections from the Sand
Looking back, I know that beach music isn’t just a genre—it’s a rhythm of life, a heartbeat that links us to the coast, to each other, and to memories that never fade. It’s the laughter under the stars, the salt air in our lungs, and the songs we’ll never forget.
With every step of the shag, every soulful chorus, and every coastal breeze, I’m reminded that this music is forever part of who I am.
